Strengthening Wildfire Readiness: Communities Unite for Outdoor Training

On Wednesday, July 16, the Lillooet Tribal Council (LTC), in collaboration with the Xwisten Lands Department and neighboring communities—T’it’q’et, Xaxli’p, Ts’kw’aylaxw, and the District of Lillooet—came together for an outdoor training exercise that brought together around 25 participants.

This incredible initiative focused on sharing knowledge, building skills, and practicing vital wildfire mitigation techniques. The team set up an impressive water delivery demonstration: starting with a fire suppression pump at the river, they pushed water uphill to Joseph Road to fill a 2,500-gallon bladder tank. A second pump then distributed water through two hose lines, supplying 19 sprinklers to create a fire barrier—demonstrating effective fly ash and ember mitigation to help protect homes and properties.

Special thanks to Brent Narcisse and Ray James for all their hard work ahead of time to make this day possible, and to all participants—some experienced, some new—who came together to learn, support each other, and strengthen community resilience. Amazing work, everyone!
