The Governance Department provides research, policy advice, and administrative support to
the LTC Council of Chiefs and staff. Key duties include:
- Staying up-to-date on provincial or federal legislation that may affect LTC (such as labour standards, child welfare legislation, education initiatives,
- Researching provincial efforts concerning the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP);
- Supporting LTC staff or departments as requested in developing specific policies and procedures (e.g. job descriptions, contract agreements, Terms of Reference)
- Supporting the Council of Chiefs in its strategic planning.
The Governance Department also supports individual departments to create measurable goals (i.e. Key Performance Indicators) and the reporting of those goals. These measurable goals
and statistical reports may help departments to apply for additional funding by showing clear
evidence of need, or by showing the effectiveness of services LTC is already providing.
In addition to the focus on policy, the Governance Department has supported the planning related to Bill C92 (implementing jurisdiction over child and family services) While each member-community is conducting its own planning to implement its jurisdiction over child & family services, there is also a need for communities to coordinate their planning and work together to ensure children are safe. It is envisioned this planning will require a muti-year effort.
